The Importance of Gradual Sex Education for Kids: Lessons from 16 Years of Teaching

Mar 24, 2025

This year marks my 16th year teaching sex education to 5th and 6th grade students and their parents, and in all that time, I’ve learned a lot about what works best in the home when it comes to talking about puberty, body changes, and relationships.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in-person classes, and I’ve noticed some common patterns that have helped me refine my approach. In fact, many years I’ll teach my Clarify Sex Education lessons, which include video lessons and parent guides you can purchase online, all in a single day with the kids. Parents love opting into this because it includes a personal session where I support them, helping them understand exactly what I’ve taught their kids. This gives them the tools and confidence to have ongoing, values-driven conversations at home later.

What makes my approach unique, and something I’m particularly proud of, is that it doesn’t just stop at educating kids. I ensure parents are equipped to explain how they want their kids to use the information and when. This way, they can share their values as the child grows, providing a deeper and more personalized learning experience.

The Importance of Gradual Learning in Sex Education

While I do offer these in-person workshops, I’ve also noticed a trend that has made me realize something incredibly important. Many years, I’ll have confident, curious kids who come in eager to learn, ask tons of questions, and get the answers they’re looking for. But then, there are years when I have a kid or two who are completely shocked—totally blindsided by the information.

Now, you might think that’s just part of the process, right? But when you combine that “shocked” kid, who had no exposure to this information before, with another child who’s more familiar with the material, it creates a situation where that overwhelmed child feels completely lost. They might even feel like the information is too much to process at once.

In some cases, I’ve seen kids become so overwhelmed that they actually cry after the class. It’s heartbreaking, but it also points to something really important: some kids just aren’t ready for this information all at once.

The Dangers of Overloading Kids with Information

While it’s essential for parents to protect their children from exposure to sexual content too early, there’s also a danger in providing zero baseline knowledge. When children are kept in the dark and then suddenly exposed to all of this information in one sitting, it can be just as overwhelming as having no information at all.

If they’ve never been given a chance to absorb and understand things gradually, the workshop—though designed to be informative and supportive—can become something that feels intimidating and “too much” for some. This can lead to the opposite effect of what we want: instead of feeling empowered by knowledge, the child might associate these conversations with fear and confusion.

The Key to Successful Sex Education: Ongoing, Gradual Conversations

The key takeaway here is that gradual learning and ongoing conversations are essential in sex education. Kids don’t always learn best when information is dumped on them all at once. Instead, they need to be introduced to these topics regularly and in small, manageable doses. This allows them to process and understand the material over time, and it gives parents the chance to stay actively involved and aware of what their kids are learning.

As much as I love teaching my one-day workshops, I’ve come to believe that for some families, using online lessons over time could be incredibly beneficial. If you’re uncomfortable discussing these topics with your child or feel unsure about how to answer their questions, my Clarify Sex Education lessons are designed to make these conversations feel natural and easy.

The lessons are structured so that you can introduce information gradually—allowing your child to digest each piece before moving on to the next. You can go at your own pace, based on what you think your child is ready for, and give them a little bit of information at a time. This helps build their understanding and confidence without overwhelming them.

The Benefits of Using Online Lessons

Here’s why online lessons can be an excellent option for parents:

  1. Pacing: You can go as slow or as fast as your child needs. There’s no pressure to cover everything in one day or even in one week.

  2. Flexibility: You can decide when to bring up a new topic. If your child is asking questions, you’ll have the resources to answer them, no matter the time of day.

  3. Support: With my online lessons, I walk you through each session, so you don’t have to worry about getting it “right.” You’ll feel supported in sharing this important information.

  4. Personalization: You’re the best person to guide your child’s learning and the most important one to share your values. These lessons make it easy to supplement what I’ve taught with your own personal beliefs.

The Power of Parent-Child Conversations

One of the most powerful aspects of the Clarify Sex Education program is the focus on parent-child communication. These ongoing conversations, whether in-person or through online lessons, give parents the tools to talk openly and honestly with their children. And the more open and honest the conversation, the easier it is to navigate this crucial time in their lives.

So, if you’re looking for a way to start or continue these important conversations about puberty, boundaries, and relationships, I highly recommend considering Clarify Sex Education lessons—either in person or online. My goal is to help you feel empowered and equipped to guide your child through the process in a way that makes sense for your family.

Conclusion

Teaching sex education doesn’t have to be intimidating. By making it a part of ongoing conversations and introducing the material gradually, you’ll ensure that your child is ready for the changes they’re going through and equipped to make informed, empowered decisions. Whether you choose in-person workshops or online lessons, the key is communication, patience, and consistency.
