What to Say (and When): A Parent’s Guide to Starting Sex Ed Conversations
Apr 25, 2025
Let’s talk about something a lot of parents aren’t thinking about yet—
And that’s the problem.
Most parents don’t start thinking about sex education until it feels urgent—when their child hits puberty, or they find something alarming online, or when a tough question catches them off guard. But by the time that moment hits… their child has likely already been gathering information from other places—friends, YouTube, school, or worse, the internet without a filter.
And not all information is created equal.
That’s why I’m writing this blog. Because you deserve to be prepared, not panicked. And your child deserves the truth—from someone who loves them, not someone trying to sell them an image, an idea, or a false sense of identity.
The Real Problem Isn’t the Talk—It’s the Timing
We think, “Oh, they’re too young. I’ll tell them when they’re older.”
But let’s pause there.
If your 3-year-old asks where babies come from—that is not a moment to dodge.
It’s a golden opportunity to show them:
✨ “You can ask me hard questions.”
✨ “You can trust me to give you honest, safe answers.”
✨ “I’m your person for this.”
You don’t need to launch into an anatomy textbook. You can say something simple like:
“Babies grow in a special place inside a mommy’s body called a uterus.”
And that’s it.
Short. Science-based. Age-appropriate. No shame. No avoidance.
And just like that, you become the source of truth.
Because here’s the reality: if you don’t answer their questions, they will go looking for answers elsewhere. And the voices waiting for them there may not have their best interests at heart.
Why This Matters So Much
We’re not just talking about a “one-time talk.”
We’re talking about setting the tone for a lifelong relationship with:
-
Their body
-
Their identity
-
Their choices
-
Their boundaries
-
And you
Sex education is foundational.
It’s not extra. It’s not optional. It’s not something to “get around to.”
Because at its core, it’s not even about sex—it’s about truth, trust, and understanding the human experience.
The very purpose of any living organism is to reproduce. Our bodies, our hormones, our growth patterns—everything is hardwired for this process. So when your child starts to change—physically, emotionally, cognitively—they need to understand why.
And you have the chance to pair that science with your values.
That’s a gift no TikTok or classroom will ever give them.
The #1 Reason Parents Wait: Uncertainty
Let’s be honest—most parents aren’t avoiding the topic because they don’t care.
They’re avoiding it because they don’t know what’s appropriate to say at what age.
That’s why I created the Clarify Lesson Series—so you can move forward with confidence.
Confidence that you:
-
Know what to say
-
Know when to say it
-
And know how to say it in a way that feels loving, grounded, and true to your family’s values.
And for those of you thinking, “But my child isn’t asking yet…”—that’s okay. You don’t have to wait for them to bring it up. You can be the one to gently open the door. I’ll show you how—with real examples, age-specific guidance, and no fear-based messaging.
