Why Boys Need Sex Education Too: A Conversation Every Parent Should Have

Nov 08, 2024

The other day, I had a conversation with a dad friend about my work with Clarify Sex Education. After listening to me explain what I offer, he shrugged and said, "Yeah, I can see how that’s important for girls."

I paused, staring at him for a moment. "You don’t think boys need sex education?" I asked.

He looked at me like I had two heads. "No, boys just figure it out. It’s just what happens."

Now, if you know me, you know I don’t hold back. I have a tendency to speak my mind, and in that moment, I couldn't help but ask a question.

"In that case, how old were you when you learned that a woman’s body has three holes down there?"

He blinked, wide-eyed, and then burst out laughing. "I think I was today years old when I learned that."

And there it is, folks. This right here is exactly why sex education is so crucial for everyone—boys and girls alike.

Let me be clear: it’s not his fault that he didn’t know this. So many of us grew up without a solid foundation for sex education. We didn’t have a reliable adult to talk to about sex, puberty, relationships, and all the changes that come with them. And honestly, most of us had to "figure it out" along the way, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes confusingly.

But here’s the thing—as parents, we have the power to give our kids a different experience. One that’s based on knowledge, empowerment, and preparation. One that equips them with the facts they need to navigate changes in their bodies, to make better choices, and to understand the complex world of relationships.

When kids are prepared, they make better decisions. They’re more confident in their bodies, in their relationships, and in their choices. And that confidence doesn’t just help them as kids—it shapes who they’ll become as adults. Better partners, better friends, better sons and daughters. It’s all rooted in knowing how their own bodies work.

It’s essential for kids to understand how human bodies function—it’s not forbidden magic and it’s not something that will hurt them. In fact, it will make their lives better.

The dad I was talking to has been married for years, he’s had children, and yet, he didn’t even know that a woman doesn’t pee out of her vagina. Can you imagine? He’s a grown man, yet this basic, foundational piece of information was a mystery to him.

Ya’ll! This is what I’m talking about. It’s time to break the taboo around sex education. Our kids need to be able to talk openly about their bodies without shame or embarrassment.

This is why I created Clarify Sex Education. It’s my gift to all of us—parents, kids, families, and society. The best part? It’s flexible. It works with your family’s unique needs and values. You get to pass on your own beliefs, but at the same time, you’re giving your kids the solid, factual foundation they deserve.

By talking openly and confidently about these topics, we show our kids that they can come to us for guidance. We become the safe space where they can get the information they need to navigate their world.

Can you imagine how different your life would have been if you had access to this kind of knowledge growing up? I sure can. I’m here to make sure our kids have that opportunity.

Let's stop the cycle of ignorance and start preparing our kids for the world they’re growing up in. Because when they know better, they do better. And that’s something we can all be proud of.

Great relationships start with good communication.
